| Health facilities:
Kotido district has two government hospitals of Abim and Kabong.
The health delivery system is, however, supported by other health
centres with different classifications. These are seven Health Centre
IIIs, 39 Health Centre IIs, and 11 licensed drug shops.
The total number of health units in the district is 48. Of these
only five health units have trained personnel in Reproductive Health
services. 44 percent of the health requirements staffing is filled
and only 66 percent of Health centre ll's have staff accommodation.
HIV/Aids counseling and testing facilities are non existent.
Kotido lacks a major referral hospital. Patients are taken to far
away Kabong and Abim
Hospitals located 100 kilometers from the district centre. Some
patients with serious illnesses are taken to Lira hospital in Lira
district. The Health Centre III's are however spread all over the
district with the capacity to handle simple diseases.
Most of the Health units are manned by untrained personnel but
the District
Leadership is working hard to provide a good working
environment to attract and retain motivated health workers. Cattle
rustling and road ambushes have also discouraged some health workers
from working in Kotido.
There are continuous outreaches down to parish level on vaccination
and immunization against BCG, Tetanus, Measles, DPT and HIV/Aids
counseling.
